Who’s got community spirit?
Each year, our Spirit Awards recognize the organizations, campaigns, teams and individuals who offered exceptional support to United Way. As part of this, the coveted Spirit of Community Award shines a deserving spotlight on the organization that, more than any other, exemplifies community support through their partnership with United Way. This year’s recipient is RBC, and the reasons are plenty:
- Dave McKay, President & CEO of RBC, served as United Way’s 2016 Campaign Chair—rallying us all toward a record $102 million raised.
- An RBC Hackathon had employees thinking up fresh and scalable ideas to increase brand awareness, and year-round community engagement and giving for United Way.
- They developed a Mobile @Work experience (making it easier than ever to give a gift to United Way), and took on important data analysis to support our ongoing work.
- As part of its community outreach, RBC Capital Markets conducted a very successful “Teaching Kids to Code” program.
And it was all topped by a record RBC Employee Giving Campaign—one that surpassed $15 million for the GTA alone! Thank you, RBC.

With every issue of our e-newsletter, we highlight an organization or donor who goes above and beyond in making a real difference for our community, from the waterfront of Toronto to the southern shore of Lake Simcoe. We call them Community Heroes!
